Music Classes for Big Kids

Rhythm Kids® (Ages 4–5 and Grades K–2)

Saturdays at 11:15 at Luscombe Music ONLY

Join us for the Alligator Collection!

The Alligator Collection includes drumming patterns from Guinea, West Africa. These patterns often accompany a song and dance called "Kakilambe" a mask-dance song performed annually by the Baga people of Guinea to celebrate life and the growth of crops. We'll clap, stomp, and drum along to the lively beat of "Let Me Hear You" and do some zydeco line dancing in "Alligator Zydeco." And "Alligator Slide" will give us a chance to experience a day in the life of an alligator. All 18 selections in this collection have been chosen and arranged specifically to support your child's music development.

Boy playing a drum

Big kids know what they like. Telling silly stories. Playing games. Being in charge. Designed specifically for pre-K and early elementary students, our active Rhythm Kids classes for big kids tap into how children this age are wired to learn, with music games, animal rhythm stories, and lots of stomping-flying-climbing fun.

Rhythm Kids is just the thing to get your child to (willingly) put down the iPad and start making music with their friends. By the end of the semester, they’ll be proud to show off what they’ve learned: to you, their friends and teachers, and—let’s face it—for some kids, every person they meet!

In each weekly music class, we drum, sing, move, and play to rhythms inspired by musical traditions around the world, from West African Gahu, to Japanese Taiko, to Brazilian Samba, just to name a few.

Rhythm Kids™ is a "parent participation optional" class and children may attend on their own, if they're ready. Parents are asked to purchase a Djembe for their child to use in class and at home.

The cornerstone of the Music Together® program is our Mixed-Age music class, for children from birth through age 5—and the grownups who love them! Classes are active music-making experiences, designed to teach the way children learn: through play with the grownups they love. Gathering babies, toddlers, and preschoolers together makes each class fun for all. There are lots of group activities for kids out there, but Music Together offers a true family music class for the youngest infant to the oldest great-grandparent, and everyone in between. Imagine an extended family with a dozen or more kids and a bunch of caring adults, and you'll get the idea!

Each week, a trained Music Together teacher leads the class in singing, dancing, and playing songs that range from tender lullabies to boisterous jams using child-friendly percussion instruments. Our award-winning music, illustrated songbook, and other print and online resources will help you continue the music-making fun at home and nurture your child's musical growth—even if you don't think of yourself as a great singer or dancer. Like parenting, making music requires no previous experience or expertise, just a willingness to get down on the floor and get silly with your child!

SUMMER 2025

Summer:

We're excited to announce our Mixed-Age Summer Music Together session, a perfect opportunity for families to experience the joy of music together. This class, designed for children from birth to age five, aligns with child development research by fostering a natural, family-style learning environment. Younger children learn through observation and imitation, while older children develop leadership skills. Adults appreciate the convenience of bringing all their children to one class.

In each 45-minute session, children participate at their own pace, engaging in singing, movement, chanting, listening, and instrument exploration. We encourage the whole family—parents, grandparents, and caregivers—to join in this enriching musical experience.
